currents

currents

A Poem by fatigued woman

We stopped at the top of the mountain

and observed the world below us.

The clouds were still, silence our best friend and dawn our guardian.

Spirits came out of the woods to greet us,

to tell us secrets we didn’t think we deserved to hear.

They told us if we put our hands together and prayed

and prayed

and prayed, Zeus would answer.

But he did.

He split the skies as we stood shoulder to shoulder.

His currents pushed you south and me north,

our arms too human

to wrap around the Earth and catch each other.

So they watched in the beloved silence as we rolled

and rolled

and rolled, into Poseidon’s large belly,

hoping maybe he would be the one to take care of our fading hearts,

water us before we wilt again,

gather enough currents before we roll innocently

into Hades’ lap on opposite sides of the mountain.
