![]() MERMAID IN A BOXA Poem by Kristin Noel Stabb![]() This piece is actually autobiographical, putting a humorous light upon the fact that a specially chosen souvenir was badly used, as was I.![]()
There was a little
mermaid gal How beautiful was
she! Golden hair flowed
down her back With sparkles from
the sea. She came to him
from far away, From ocean’s sandy
shore. He, perplexed,
delighted was And, dazzled,
loved her more. For many years his
dreams were filled With miracles as
this An angel come for
him alone That he might
squeeze and kiss. He thanked his
lucky stars that sped A siren all this
way To pull him from
his doldrums And mark a brand
new day. His pain and grief
and blindness, too, Were disappearing
fast. The mermaid gave
her heart, as well, “Real love, a man,
at last!” She knew that he
adored her so Now, life redeemed
from on-the-rocks He’d be so proud,
the world to show! But, no, he put
her in a box. “What the hell?”
she sadly thought. But when he,
often, took her out, By loving words
she was caught Into the lie that
says the more Trapped and
squeezed a lady is That being bound
is meant to mean: How treasured and
essential ‘tis. ‘Til sounds of
other visitors Came to her ears
each day The bedsprings
squeaked and women laughed The mermaid fumed,
“What can I say?! And so she asked
him outright, once, “If I am coveted
and loved, Essential to your
life, Why is it I am
locked up here And not your shown-off
wife?” He hung his head
(embarrassed boy) “It’s just
because, you see, You’re too sexy
for display By a Baptist,
farmer guy like me.” “Oh,” she said,
“now it all makes sense; I came from far
away That you might
have the Greatest Gift And still roll in the hay.” © 2011 Kristin Noel StabbReviews
