Into the Fire, Into the Void

Into the Fire, Into the Void

A Poem by An Li Leung

I was born
I am living
I will have lived
I will die

And as all things that are born, that live, that have lived, and that will die
I too will vanish into the void
An empty place where no names are called and no voices sound
A hollow arena where death duels those that defy its right to the afterlife

I have seen it

It will be my home
My everlasting rest
My crypt of dark'ning shadowstone
My resting place post-life's daunting tests

I have felt it

It burrows deep in my bones
My marrow, blood red, feeds its fires
My heart a tribute left on the pyre

I welcome it

The fleshless life beyond the light
The cauldron from which the demons dine

I loved this right up until the final line...moving through the tenses was a great touch, adding movement. Frankly I would internalize the rhymes or dispense with them as they do not contribute. And the overall sense of this, with self as protagonist, is interesting but that last line, that descends into cheap horror novel imagery.

You know, I really agree with you! I'll pin it on the words "cauldron" and "demon".
