Mistaken Perfection

Mistaken Perfection

A Story by Davidgeo

It is possible to remain moral while doing amoral things.  I relate this to the concept of different kinds/sizes of "infinities".  Sometimes it is absolutely necessary to do things in the moment that you know will haunt you later in life.  It is a self-less act that the vast majority of us cannot truly intellectually process within the common concept of morality and civilized behavior.  Being able to consciously switch between a wolf-like personality and a human-like personality at will is an art form in it of itself.  While most of us can learn to do this over time, there are some who are inherently better at doing this than others.  And some of them, it can be said, are nearly "undomesticatable" and will always struggle to transition between the wolf and the human.  Sometimes, this can be a liability, sometimes this can be the difference between a successful endeavor.  There is no such thing as a flawless disposition and sometimes (most times) our mistakes and flaws serve crucial roles in refining ourselves into becoming better version's of ourselves....  our mistakes drive our evolution.  Sometimes, imperfection is our best path to perfection... sometimes, imperfection is our only path to perfection.

I found this quite interesting from a philosophy sort of standpoint. I'm no expert when it comes to understanding why humans act the way they do, and the good from the bad, but I like to hear about ideals, ways of thinking, and trying to reach answers for things that are difficult for me to understand. This story shows your insight into the human condition, and I agree with what you've laid out for us to learn from. Definitely something I did not expect to find on a site with mainly fictional works. Something I'm happy you were willing to share. I'd love to read more stories like this in the future, you have a talent for deep thoughts.

I agree with you, Dsvr. No one is perfect. It's our flaws that make us unique; imperfection is a part of our personalities that make us different from everyone else.

At it's heart, this is all just about the concept of evolution.
None of us is perfect, most of us know and admit this to be true. Despite that understanding or knowledge most of us struggle on. We do our best, to be our best. Those who care do as much as they can to make the journey through life as easy and as pleasant a path as possible. We are, all of us, here for such a relatively short period of time. Isn't it better to provide steps us for others as well as ourselves?

What "doesn't have to" happen has almost nothing to do with "is going to" happen.
wow, a very interesting philosophy & a great write..
i particularly like your description 'flawless disposition'... aren't we all !
when you say "wolf-like personality" do you mean 'womanizing type' or 'devouring type' ??
as i see the first type as more exploitative, & the second type as more primeval & savage.

I can tell that you are coming from a very deep reflective place here and it is comforting to read. There is a song, "I Am Only Human" and we need to be reminded of it from time to time. I often make mistakes trying to 'fix' things and it makes it worse. Great write Dave!

Dave, that last sentence is the most profound. I've been in law enforcement for 27 years, and I often struggle with that wolf-human transition. Maybe I'm a mutant, a combination of the two. I've had many days where I pointed a gun and was prepared to kill someone, and thirty minutes later I was helping remove a dead woman from an inverted car as her boyfriend stood-by, waiting for me to come tell him she was okay. I think your poem is call for us, maybe individually, to redefine perfection. Good poetry does that. It makes us challenge long-held beliefs, and that's a good thing.

Simply put...this is relatable. The true natural sentient being that is wholly in tune with their animalistic spirit, but easily transitions into domestication without the need for external constraints like leashes. Bravo Dave! Is this really "Mistaken Perfection?"

If you've yet to read Steppenwolf, by Herman Hesse, than I would highly recommend it - though I don't expect you'll particularly like the ending, I've dog eared the man-wolf dichotomy in that novel as the first of its kind.

Though it's been done before (Nebuchadnezzar and Enkidu) I feel like the post-modern, bourgeois take was first rendered by him.

Enjoyed this read though, and I appreciate where you're coming from.
