under this smile

my feelings most nights

under this smile
is a collection of tears
a river of emotion
a cloud of fear

Somewhere inside there is a girl
tiny and frail
full of fear
living in the shadows,
of who they want her to be

every night she listens,
to the words
spoken and un-spoken
she lays in the dark
as one hot tear rolls down
her cheek

I used to have this theory when I was little
that hot tears meant you were angry
and cold tears meant you were sad.
But, I think, I hadn't yet felt the burn
that comes with tears of adulthood.
