~A Barbed Wire Heart~

By: Paige Taylor

A barbed wire heart,

With dreams made in unison.

Your heart was my home,

And yet, you broke mine as if it were only made of stone.

Allow for these silent words to remain unspoken,

And leave me in the midst of these promises broken.

I rise and fight, to be nothing but broken.

Practically all of your life, they tell you that the key to living a successful life is to always “remain strong”.

But where on earth do you begin to reconstruct deconstruction?

It is no concrete highway,

It is not a smooth ride

Just another rocky road,

With the tides rising high.

Rushing in to overpower me,

And everything I stand for

This heavy rain,

Is just another heavy down pour.

And as I look,

I can easily see that something else has died here:

A dream.

I am alas free!

But my new prison here is shame,

For I am the true coward.

Repressing the memories,

Placing all of the tragedies in which

I feel I cannot handle in a vault.

I lose the combination.

In the midst of all this devastation,

Eventually someone grows weary,

They blink and make a mistake.

And before you know it,

All that is left

Is yet just another vague highway,

With dreams made in unison.
