Chapter 1

“Your heart is your strongest weapon.”

As the sentence pierced the air, it wasn’t just words any more. They were powerful and meaningful, imploring the very idea of just saying it. It was true; your heart is your strongest weapon, but why need say it? Nearly everyone had a story to tell about it. Even I have my own. But a few don’t. In fact, the very person who uttered the sentence was the bearer of great power, and also the user of it. When he spoke the saying, the words literally became power. His heart was proving it was his strongest weapon when it powered the sentence.

The two of us were engaged in conversation, and nearly everyone had stopped talking to hear us speak. It wasn’t often that someone so young spoke, or even knew of this saying. For the young ones, this saying meant nothing. Their power had not yet developed, and they barely knew of the fraction of the power their heart held. But something was different with this young one. His power was stronger then the others, almost equal to the tribal elder that sauntered around the town from time to time. This young one had great power, all developed, but not all the way. When I spoke to him, it frightened me, for this boy’s power was stronger then it was supposed to be.

“I agree.” I said. “But barely does one so young implore this fact. Who was your father?”

“Houren Bellameh.” the boy answered. “And my father taught me of this fact before he disappeared.”

Yes, it was true Houren Bellameh, the town most trusted KnightCaster, had disappeared recently. The last person who supposedly saw him was his son, Kai. I suddenly took an unclaimed interest in this boy, who was apparently Kai, his malevolent power, and surely valuable memory. Houren Bellameh had supposedly passed on his productive power to his son, which was Kai, and that boy had immediately become valuable to anyone who could get his hands on him. My hands clenched, and I knew by the stunned faces that appeared around us that a fight was coming.

“Come, Kai Bellameh.” said a be speckled man with a curious look in his glassed eyes from the crowd. “Let me show you to my home. We can go over some things there…”

“No, young Kai! You must follow me, for I hold the secret to where your father lies!”

“Son of Houren Bellameh! I hold the true secret in which you pursue!”

“No, it is I which you should trust!”

“Do not believe a word my brothers say! Trust me! I will not lie to you!”

Young Kai, son of Houren Bellameh, looked around that the crowd that had gathered nervously. He had been in hiding for two years before now. Now, he understood why.

Suddenly, a new voice spoke up in the crowd. The citizens began clearing, making a path to where Kai and I stood. A tall, strongly muscled man with lost emerald eyes appeared before us. Everyone began bowing, so I took it upon myself to do so as well.

“Young Kai, son of Houren and Jay Bellameh, true bearer of the Bellameh family power source, I stand before you not as your ruler, but as your King. I ask you to return to the throne where your father sat and take over his place as the rightful KnightCaster of Vviara Kingdom.”

Kai bowed swiftly, for now I recognized King Andropal, the king of our kingdom, Vviara. It was true Houren sat on a throne made of rightful gold and supplied the Bellameh family with great fortune, but wouldn’t it be Houren who sat upon the throne, not his son?

“As a point, your majesty, I wish to speak in front of thee.”

The King eyed me suspiciously as he asked, “And who is thy whom wishes to speak?”

“Andr, sir. Andr Shiro. A Caster and loyal follower.”

King Andropal nodded grimly. “I grant you wish to speak.”

“In what case of Houren’s return will you place him?”

The King’s eyes flashed. “Come again?”

“You know the well respected KnightCaster as well as I do, sir. He was a old friend of mine in the Old Ages, before the time when you became King. He disappeared a few months after he set out to find his dear wife Jay Bellameh, whom was carried off by the Hundora Tribe to the east. After he disappeared, with all due respect, you began acting like he never existed and began the search for his son. When, or even if he returns, what would you do with him if his son’s already taken his place? Or even if you place him back in the place of most trusted KnightCaster, what would you do with his son? You cannot just place him down when he has all the rightful degrees and all. It would be considered disrespectful!”

“I beg your pardon!” he outraged. “I am King and I do as I please! If Houren Bellameh does return, he will be honored, but he will not return to his position. He will be placed at another open position. If not, then he will start a humble life in the village with his family at his side. With all due respect, Andr, I wished you would keep your malicious comments to yourself!”

I kept silent, for he had used my first name only, and it is considered disrespectful to use a Caster’s first name only. Usually, Kings would use a Caster’s first and last name when addressing them. Nonetheless, I didn’t want to upset his majesty any more than he already was.

King Andropal turned back towards Kai Bellameh. “Do you wish to take over the position as most trusted KnightCaster?” he questioned curiously.

“It is my wish to be given a few days thought of this offer.” Kai replied.

Smart Boy. I thought.

King Andropal nodded gracefully. “If that is your wish.” he muttered, then stepped away from the boy. He exited out of the crowd and disappeared from sight.

“Smart Boy.” I told him aloud. “For you have no training.”

Suddenly and unexpectedly, Kai Bellameh fell to his knees in a pleading stance. “Help me hide!” he begged. “I do not want to take over my position as KnightCaster. And it is considered impolite to turn down a King’s request. You knew my father and his magics! You can help train me!”

I looked upon the pleading boy with yearning eyes. My heart, which is my most trusted ally, told me to except the challenge, for I would be thankful for it later. But still, a part of me wandered off to my memories, when the boy was looking so adoringly at the King. My distrust for a street rat and my dislike for King Andropal brought me to me decision.

“Your father’s magics I know not. But I was one of the very lucky few whom witnessed your father producing his productive powers. I will train you in my knowledge, but you must look deep inside your heart for help on your own powers.”

“Will you hide me?” the boy pleaded, looking into my seemingly merciless eyes.

“Yes.” I said.
