Beautiful

Beautiful

A Poem by Lizzie Mitchell

So maybe my design is not
aesthetically pleasing to you.
My God did not create me
to give your eyes an orgasm.
Perhaps society put that hunger in your eyes.
Maybe society is what gave eyes the power to lust.
Are we conspiring against ourselves?
Do we want to forget the origin of true beauty?
Have we already?
From the day we are born,
we are taught this obsession.
The first time we open our eyes,
we see lips from the words,
“You’re so beautiful”.
Sometimes I imagine the brain of a newborn.
What is its first thought?
Does it wonder,
“Why am I here?”
If so, are we teaching our children their purpose is to be beautiful?
