Wishes

Wishes

A Poem by Celeste N. Wallis

If I could I would go back.
Back to every wish I've ever made.
Back to the moment before I blew out the flames of the candles.
Back to every shooting star.

I would use those moments to wish for you back.
I would go back and beg the stars to let me keep you.

Of course I know that wishes are superstition.
That they are nothing more than a hope-filled question sent out to the depths of nowhere.

But my god, if there was even the slightest chance that these wishes could bring you back,
I would stay up every night and shout my love for you to the first star I see.
I would collect rusty pennies from the sidewalks of our past.
I would track the night sky's every movement as not to miss the new moon.
I'd spend all of my money on wishing fountains.

I would sell my soul to the man or woman in the sky that controls my destiny.
If I had even the slightest chance at being yours again,
I would grow gardens filled with flowers to pick petals off of.
I would follow every silly superstition that's ever been heard of.
I'd spend every waking moment finding new ways to wish you back.

I've never seen a wish come true.
But I'd be willing to believe in fairytales just to be closer to you
Just to be comforted by the thought of being yours again.
