What Abuse Meant

What Abuse Meant

A Poem by Sophie

When I was four,

I was quiet because I was told,

When I was four,

the bruises were hidden under my clothes.

When I turned eight,

I started to realize what was happening to me,

When I turned ten,

I found out what “abuse” meant.

I lived in silence, in fear,

afraid if I ever spoke,

my Daddy's secret,

would be exposed.

I knew I should've told,

and I hated the pain,

but Daddy’s are Daddy's

didn't other girls go through the same?

Finally I turned thirteen,

and he did something new to me,

that was when I realized I was in a hole,

I couldn't get out

and I could only dig down.

So I hid more,

lost my friends,

while I tried to figure out

how to escape my Daddy's hands.

Finally, I'm fourteen now,

and I've escaped the dread,

but I don't feel any better now,

now that Daddy has a hole in his head.

So not a true story, I practically cried while writing this because I love my dad and he'd never do this and I could never kill him. But anyway...

Wow, excellent impact Sophie. I believe this is one of your best just because the little emotional things you bring to the table: I like how you always said "Daddy" instead of just "dad", I feel people can make a better connection that way as it seems so much more...close. I also liked how you portrayed his death, only mentioning a "hole", never the gun, never you pulling a trigger, it seemed so innocent but at the same time so dark. Great job, I liked it a lot, keep it up

I love this even though I love my Dad he's never physically abused me or intentionally emotionally bruised me but it's still a relatable story

I know you said that it never happend to you but it happend to me as a child I was abused by my mom emotionally. I understand pain too well. I live with it everyday even though I don't live with her anymore..

Amazing. I find myself saying this in all of your poems. They are all perfect! This poem almost brought me to tears. It made me think about how many children really do go through this, well maybe not the killing their own father part, but for the most part this is true! The poem is so very emotional and powerful and definitely tugs at the heart strings. Such a great poem.

A sad and powerful poem. I raised three daughters. I cannot understand how anyone would want to hurt a child. I did like the ending. We must teach children to report act of violence. A excellent poem.
