Nightmare

Nightmare

A Poem by Mary

Surrounded by watching scavengers

Prey among many predators

I look into the endless night,

Seeing nothing

But the pure delight,

Of the eyes watching me

They glow with hunger,

But never move

Are my eyes playing tricks?

I think not when I hear,

The breaking of sticks

Thump...thump…thump!

Goes my heart,

In my chest,

In a constant state of distress

How did I get into this mess?

Did I fail,

An important test?

But those questions,

You see

Escape me,

And all I hear is,

Just the howl

Of the wind

And the whispers of many

I try to break free,

But nothing will let me

My feet are stuck,

In the slimy muck

So I can go nowhere.

When I finally die,

I no longer

Feel or care,

Bye, Bye my Nightmare
