Unsee

Unsee

A Poem by Mashoosh Kateb
"

Too many gruesome sights for one's eyes to bear

"

The blood that flowed in the name of tribe was better left unseen

The throat that was slit for being the wrong color was better left unseen

The rage in the eyes of the merciless killer was better left unseen

Better left unseen was the crawl of a child toward one last morsel

Better left unseen was the lifeless woman who was used as a dirty rug

Better left unseen was the sight of the father screaming for his only child

How to unsee the things that were seen to make this world mild?

Bingo! the last line- How to unsee the things that were seen to make this world mild- that leaves the impact. Such sights soften this world's heart, and they pique us and change us from within. Unseeing is one option, but not letting those things occur is what everyone of us prays for.

You're quite the poet. :)

This whole piece is powerful - ignorance really is a bliss and images like the ones you mentioned are difficult to comprehend alone. But the flow of the poem feels disrupted at "being the wrong color" because, to me, read like that was the end of the sentence. Also, maybe I'm pronouncing morsel wrong, but the "rug" in the line below it doesn't flow? rhyme? as well as it could.

The second last line really spoke to me. And I liked the change in structure of the sentences when the poem shifted from those doing the crimes to the victims.

I like this a lot, because it's all so true. It's so much easier to get by by ignoring some of the scarier and sadder parts of the world. Unfortunately that's not easy to do, and it also doesn't solve anything. Looking forward to more!

It isn't it? Thanks for your review.
Beautifully heartbreaking. A true spoken portrait of the tragedies of humanity.

Thank you for your review.
Some crimes are hard to see and some shows too. Sometimes life can come without warning labels...Some people can take the shock and agony and some can't ...Bravo..............
