COMPANY IS COMING

COMPANY IS COMING

A Poem by Sonia Walker

Company is coming,
I'm cleaning the house,
scurrying about like a chased mouse,
the dishes are screaming to be washed,
begging me to clean them in a hurry
from yesterday's dinner which was about curry.

The old vacuum cleaner is humming along,
sucking up dustballs as big as a fist,
as they disappear into the tunnel of dirty mist,
all of a sudden there is a loud bang,
making me quiver as the cell phone rang,
tripping over the vacuum twisted cord I fell hard,
answering the phone feeling like a tub of lard.

I wonder if this day will ever be over,
as I look on the calendar on the wall,
what a fool I have been to stumble and fall,
I realize it is April the first playing a joke on me,
cleaning the house for company a whole month early,
which makes my mood crabby and surly.

this is a breath of fresh air. to my mind the poets here are way too serious. although there are excellent poets on here, there's not enough fun.
funny and well penned. I could see mum in this character, in her younger days, minus the vacuum and the fall :)

I really love this. You get high marks for creativity & originality. I love when a poet can seize on an everyday topic & make it into something noteworthy & fun & interesting. I never expected this to end in a twist, which makes it all the more satisfying. Your playful spirit shines thru every line, even tho the rhyme isn't always coming as regular as some might prefer. To me, the message is paramount & in your poem, it shines thru the dustballs & fur drifts.

My mom used to be so fussy about cleaning for company & cooking up a storm, she never even sat down to actually VISIT with her company. I'll never make THAT mistake. To me, it's all about the person . . . to hell with the trappings! (((HUGS)))

Ah, this reminds me of how we clean up so much when guests are coming in five minutes rather quickly, but slowly clean up when there's free time. I like how the poem is charming in its way of portraying that rush to clean before company arrives.
