This is Your Soul Being Ripped from Your Body

A Poem by Lorelei Middlesex
"

For Life. And what he's done without doing anything at all.

"

This is your soul being ripped from your body.
Here, take it in your hands. Lose it completely.
Now see it, a smock, on the shoulders, the body
of the Life of your life. Lose it completely.

You are violent. Like a carving knife, he peels
your soul, ripped from your body. Handed to him
with your own wrists, face up. For you, it feels
like a jack knife, bending inside your skin.

Your body is open, like your soul left among split
fabrics. On the ground they are side by side.
Look: broken, misaligned, from the hems and the lips,
flawlessly paired. If walked, matched in stride.

That was your soul being ripped from your body.
You've lost it completely, you lost it completely.
