Shadow

Shadow

A Poem by michaela

My  silhouette friend, the darkness that follows me

Consumes the memories of my past.

She holds on to those whispers of identity

That I have long since shed,

Conveying my discarded disguises

In the hope of helping me to remember myself.

She is a black contour, my outline.

I cannot see her features because she has the face

Of so many different people, all of whom were once me.

She pushes memories into my subconscious mind.

And when the shadows of the night go away

And I awake in the morning, I reminisce

Of  a girl who once was.

A girl who I no longer know.

This girl is familiar to me,

Her outline, the shape of her personality

Seems identical to my own.

She is me, the version that clings to all the discarded pieces,

Weighing the memories on my shoulders when the time is right.

She is complete, carrying all pieces at all times

While I try to forget.
