‘Behold, thou art fair, my beloved, yea, pleasant: also our bed is green. The beams of our house are cedar, and our rafters of fir.

         -Song of Solomon 1:16,17

(There are two of them. Chairs, people. A table between them. We can see from the neck down, sometimes the mouth, never the eyes. She has a suitcase to her side. The air is silent, waiting constantly.)

She: “I remember watching this door open for the first time. And knowing that something would happen here… I never knew what I would resemble, but I wanted to be true to it. To this.”

(He says nothing. Tries. But no, nothing.)

She: “There was too much waiting for us.”

He: “I still want you.”

She: “Sometimes I feel that this was written before we even began to speak.”

He: “When I dream of us, everything is overwhelmed. There isn’t an inch undiscovered in taste or in light.”

She: “I didn’t know.”

He: “That first evening…”

She: “Yes..”

He: “All of it…”

She: “…was ours.”

He: “ We knew she would find out. You said she would see your face reflected in my eyes.”

She: “And your hands would return to the shape of my breasts while you slept.”

He: “She never looked at my eyes, she never looked at my hands.”

She: “I did.”

(He sighs deep. His voice is cracked after this. Hers remains so calm.”

He: “I am afraid of what is inside of this door.”

She: “I wonder what your hands will resemble now..”

He: “All of it eclipsed. The dreams of the before, the language changed.”

She: “When I fall in love again, I hope he will never sleep.”

He: “This wasn’t supposed to happen.”

She: “I want to know about fullness.”

He: “I understand the way you believe.”

She: “When I fall in love again I want to believe.”

I second Michael's observations...the power in this is in the wanting and the sharpness of the word choice. Emotion does not elude these words, and some of the lines are so tangible that I can nearly taste them. Well written...provacative and thought provoking. :)
