The Plains

The Plains

A Poem by MissRed
"

not sure what inspired this one. it has been awhile!

"

my toes are frozen and my legs are asleep

the highway is long and boring but we keep driving

past seven-elevens and circle k's

my bladder is angry in protest

i look across the seat at him

his face is dark with deep thought

i open my mouth to talk but

it seems like too much effort

minutes pass like hours

i cough and look at him again

he didn't even flinch

what thought is worth holding onto?

my pepsi is hot in my cold hand

i want to move my feet from the window

pins and needles attack

as i begin to settle back down again

once, out of the corner of my eye

i see him begin to see me

i try to look content

why that is important, i don't know

oklahoma, i decide, isn't such a bad state

serene in its blandness

simple and solid like us

we could live here someday.
