Barbarian

Barbarian

A Poem by Maggy Lauren

You never were a fan of mine

Until we found a common thread

You played a game that I despised

So I focused on your strengths instead

It wasn’t clear how lost you were

I underestimated the things you lack

Which is why I chose to overlook

The knife sticking out of my back

But we live in a barbaric world

Full of illusions and duplicity

And you fell into that awful abyss

While I chose to tread more carefully

I silently rose from the dead,

Much to your dismay

You knew me well enough to realize

I wouldn’t bask in my own shame

You hate everything about me

From my cryptic ways to my tattoo

Only when you came to realize

I played the game slightly better than you
