I Happen to be Standing Here

I Happen to be Standing Here

A Poem by Maggy Lauren

I happen to be standing here,

Have you forgotten?

You reprimand my strengths

Stripping me of every desire

It’s in your nature to leave me shaken

And I’ve not the courage not to care

You take refuge in the things

You don’t understand

I am your mirror, your reflection

But in no way am I like you

If I once thought highly of you, now

I rarely think of you at all

The things I can’t change

Will always be present

My heart forever closed

To your discouragement

In my weakest moments

I will choose to be righteous,

For you always told me

That is how we are defined

But if that is the truth,

How would I define you?

I’ve chosen to embrace the bitterness

That you’ve thrust upon me

So in the future, when you’re curious

Of the person I’ve become

I will happen to be standing there,

I won’t have forgotten
