The Cardinals

The Cardinals

A Poem by Michael McLaughlin

The Cardinals

Just outside my window,
At the foot of a hill,
I saw two Cardinals,
Go sifting through the mill.

Through twigs, leaves, and branches,
They searched among the fray,
While chirping back and forth,
To get their mate's okay.

They flew into a bush,
A little ways away,
And traveled back and forth,
Throughout their busy day.

They argued back and forth,
About which straw was best,
But soon had found enough,
To build their little nest.

They settled in a tree,
Not far from where they'd been,
Continuing their work,
Conversing now and then.

I wanted in some way,
To welcome my new friends,
Perhaps some other time,
Before the season ends.
