What Makes Us, Us?A Poem by Michael StevensRemembering can be a bad thing!Such complex beings we are--such
a complicated mix of our past and the present. A
cutting remark is said, and 20, 30, 40 or more years later,
we still remember it, like it was yesterday--for some
reason, we recall that nasty bit of conversation, when we can't
recall what we had for lunch, that little snippet of conversation
packs quite a wicked punch.

We carry the scars throughout our
lifetime, and they control our every action. We know we should
just let it go, but we're helpless--it takes on
its own perpetual power, coming back to haunt us in the dark
of the long night, and towers over us like a living thing,
telling us what to say. From so long ago it shapes us, to
this very day. © 2015 Michael Stevens |
