What Makes Us, Us?

What Makes Us, Us?

A Poem by Michael Stevens
"

Remembering can be a bad thing!

"

Such complex beings we are--such a complicated

mix of our past and the present. A cutting remark is said,

and 20, 30, 40 or more years later, we still remember it,

like it was yesterday--for some reason, we recall that nasty bit

of conversation, when we can't recall what we had for lunch,

that little snippet of conversation packs quite a wicked punch.

***

We carry the scars throughout our lifetime, and they control

our every action. We know we should just let it go,

but we're helpless--it takes on its own perpetual power,

coming back to haunt us in the dark of the long night, and towers

over us like a living thing, telling us what to say.

From so long ago it shapes us, to this very day.

That's very true. And that's why we should watch the things we say. One careless word could scar someone else for life.
