A philosophical piece that centers around the greatest true Pandemic to ever plague Mankind's The Human Race: War! Fighting wars to end wars is equivalent to a dog chasing its tail ...

Within reflections of shadows

darkness doth love to lurk,

hiding in clever plainest sight

of making ones eyes to hurt,

striving to see that which is cloaked,

yet so clearly is keenly seen,

obvious as a blow to one's nose.

An itch of a glimmers gleam,

so patently elusive to the setting,

of ones eyes upon its ominous size,

lest one might attain its true image,

as a most treasured deadly prize,

sought after by so many for so long,

in utter warmongering desperation.

Man to war man as clan wars clans,

people to war people as nations war nations,

in names of zealously shouted cries,

stirring hearts to battle's rally,

green fields of flowers turned red,

in death tolls soon to tally,

of mighty men led by mightier men.

All the world a Chessboard of glory,

all such glories of war soon forgotten,

as war's reality became altogether gory

in a war to end all wars, so it was said,

as we were then dumbly led

to a belief that the millions, who died

died for good cause of blood bright red.

Dying not in vain, for no reasons,

to be thought of as so unjust,

as every man of every land, believed,

fervently believed in being deceived,

that it was a war worth the fighting,

sacrificing life and limb in fool's trust,

because its doing was surely a must.

History repeated as World War II

brought to us a sure sanity's end,

as Man created Atomic Bombs,

a new means to arguments mend,

creating a uniting of the nations

at League of Nations bitter end,

war to end with peace as Man's friend.

Man seeking piece at any cost,

now to wage war as a group,

parading around the world as one

in placing of United Nation's troops

pledged to the ending of all wars,

even if a war must be won,

in slaughtering men to save lives.

Wars fought in most valiant effort,

to make all peoples and nations one,

one searched within reflections of shadows,

concealing Freedom's wool to fleece,

greedy men willing to wage war eternally,

for profit of nation's war machines,

no price too high to achieve the illusion of peace.

Freedom but an illusion disguised as Liberty,

men going to war seeking after peace,

only to find no peace in any war,

only war after war, of war of wars,

leading yet to one more war to end all wars,

in proclaiming peace by means of war,

death on battlefields for the good of all Mankind,

as gazing into reflections of shadows,

dost render all Mankind blind.

Donovan asked similar questions with his song, with his "Universal Soldier" stating "this is not the way to put an end to war."
We go to war to get liberty, we go to war to give others liberty...and yet we are shackled to the violence...how is that liberty?
Strong, strong statement this poem makes.

Someone can write a thesis on this marvelous poem; message is powerful and worthy. I think you are a poet and an orator. Your reflections on the idea
of war and peace is right on.
Like the saying goes:" If you want peace, prepare for war."
