You Will Not Eat Me

You Will Not Eat Me

A Poem by nadia dmitri
"

Even if I ask you to

"

I tiptoe when you are near

And you are always near

Your steps echo, heavy mnemonics

They crescendo up and down the the stairs

I try to forget how dark it is

Clutched inside your tensed jaw

The blackness scares me

How diligently it keeps light out

I sit on your tied-tongue

Unchewed, uncomfortably warm

Can you taste my hunger

Dancing inside your mouth

I wish you would just swallow me

Get on with digesting my doubt

I am tired of being told I am beautiful

In a place where I cannot be seen

I am tired of straining my muscles

For love I will never reach

I sit obediently still, kissing your muffled words

I bite my own hand and the fear it feeds me

I do what is easy

I wait, silently, hopelessly

Is this really what all the fuss is about?

Aching inaction?

You will not eat me

Even if I ask you to

A stinging stare

Into the rest of my unlived life

Loving someone and dying from the hunger of unrequited love.
We can hand ourselves over on a silver platter, but often the other will just refuse to partake,
not even an appetizer.
