A Turn of the Neck

A Turn of the Neck

A Poem by Haley Smith

Unwanted.
You are unwanted, yet
you swing through
like an old friend.

You ease into my mind
and nestle in the
bed you built
long ago.

A surprise. A
predator. A smooth leopard
resting on its haunches.
Waiting for the moment
when you can see through the grass
and pounce.

I feel you all over me.
You've latched onto me,
dragging the shell of me
across the floor.

Nothing, you tell me.
I am nothing.
I am stupid.
I don't meet anything.
Failure is inevitable.

You always come every now
and again, and you take
take take.
Invite yourself over,
suck me dry,
leave me rattled.

You are faceless
but you
are everywhere.

Wow great poem. I can feel the emotion of being used and abused radiating from your words.
