Mother

Mother

A Poem by Nikhil Ranka

My love, you’ve fought my battles and heard my cries.
You’ve stood by me throughout your life.
You’ve nurtured me in your womb, breathing and growing for me;
With not a tear nor a cry.

You’ve lost your beauty, to teach me my duty.
You’ve lost your joy, to watch me fly.
You’ve showered me with love, held my desires above.
You’ve shielded me from ache, forgiven my mistakes.

You’ve taught me to walk, make pleasant talks.
You’ve taught me to be fair, treat all like friends in despair.
You’ve taught me to be meek, conquer highest of peaks.
You’ve taught me to be kind, possess a tranquil mind.

Now that I’m bold, twenty four summers old.
The time has come for us to farewell.
To depart and make a humble start.
To stay apart and mend broken hearts.

You’ve lost your smile and your happiness long time.
Now, I promise you this, I will bring back the joy,
That you’ve yearned for, since the day I boot,
When you sat and caught your belly proud.

I ask you not, to fight my battles now;
For I am all bold and stout as you.
Now, you stand by the door and await my cry:

“Mother, Mother;
I've returned home with all the joy,
That you once lost,
Hoping someday,
I would fly.”
