A Red Moon Rises

A Red Moon Rises

A Poem by Nick Lybarger
"

Peace is the only way.

"

A red moon rises,

Oversees the world.

With a disapproving frown,

He strikes us down.

A red moon rises,

Fills us with fear.

Something that we cannot avoid,

Greed the instigator.

A red moon rises,

Destroying families,

Fathers, and husbands,

Who never wanted anything but peace.

A red moon rises,

How long will we let the ignorant lead us astray?

How long will we allow ourselves to be deceived?

A red moon rises,

And we fall.

My first thought was--Mars! Right, red planet, but... the imagery is suggestive of a god of war and destruction. The rhymes don't feel all that forced, and the image of a red moon rising brings with it a sense of silent dread. I'd love to see more specific imagery, or perhaps more hints at mystery... about what's going to happen, what's coming with the rising moon.
