The Rage Beast

The Rage Beast

A Poem by Nyomi McKay

The birds have fled

The woods are silent

The life is gone.

A roar cuts through the empty air

The rage is loud and clear

The Beast sends thunder through the ground

As it hammers through the trees

Their wood goes flying

They stand no chance

Against this old and ancient Beast

A single buck

Its eyes are blind

Stands alone

With no defence the buck will fall

Like a leaf from a great oak tree

The Beast comes close

Its breath is rank

One swipe knocks the buck down

It lies still

Broken

It had no choice

The Beast is cursed

Each soul it slays burns it

But it cannot stop

A mighty rage continues on within

This is really good. To me it seems to have almost a fatalist meaning, like we are condemed to our fate and cannot escape it, no matter how much it hurts.
