Nights

Nights

A Poem by Omar

there were nights

when his heart would beat

exceptionally fast

in his deep sleep

The coal engine

Of his chest

there were nights

his fingertips would be

exceptionally warm

in the winter

Musk,

Skin

there were night

terrors which would

wake him up

and I would stroke his sunlight hair

so he could fall asleep again

there would be

mornings,

we would lay in

forgotten, lost

reveries

on an island

in a bustling Beirut street

alone

there were nights

I wished I could learn

all his secrets

nights upon nights

I would pray to

the stars

when the music

coming from the mosques

would serenade the cold five a.m. air

and crown the heat of our bones

nights,

when mercury would seep from the moon

down and through the fault lines

between our two bodies

and his heart would still beat oh so fast

in his cindered chest

and his fingertips would still be

too warm

but I

I

would soon dissolve

into the underside of oblivion

. oh, this is just magical writing ... incredibly stunning poetry ... i'm instantly reminded of someone ... there would be nights ... when he smiled in his sleep ... and i was moved to tears ... a troubled soul ... who woke up ... unaware of his fears ... i used to wait for him to fall asleep ... and wake up before he woke up ... but he didn't know ... he just didn't know anything about himself ...
