THE PERFECT TEN

THE PERFECT TEN

A Poem by R J Askew
"

All hail the mythical No.10, a man of such genius he surely cannot exist - but he does and is called La Pulga, the flea, Lionel Messi!

"

My boot is in this lightning place;

I strike, the ball obeys my will.

O how it rocks into the goal!

The sight that spurs a billion souls.

O now they leap in wild delight!

Some even die (it is their right).

But I, I am calm because I know,

That I was born to win this game,

That in this instant of my life,

I am the agent of the gods.

O how they scream and roar my name!

My shirt, I throw into the crowd.

~

I am the perfect ten they'll say

Now that I've won it here today.

Quite an insight into a footie fan's mind, the desire for such a player to even exist .. a hero for all times wearing that special shirt! The greatest of all on the field! Perfection in words about perfection in play.

I am utterly flabbergasted by the relationship between what we scoffingly refer to as soccer and its supporters, be it an FA club or a national team. Over here,we really don't have anything analogous to it--perhaps college football in a pastel sense of it. I found this take on what this Platonic footballer's internal monologue to be like absolutely fascinating.
