Hush

Hush

A Poem by D.L. Simmons

modern nursery rhyme #1

Hush

Hush now, baby, please don’t cry

Mama’s gonna sing you to sleep tonight

This world can be a scary place

I’ll love you and I’ll hold you tight

I’ll keep you from all the noise outside

Children try to play with knives

They join gangs to feel alive

Guns and fights make up their lives

Hush my baby, you’re still safe

From all the pain and hate and rage

You’re beautiful and you are pure

And I wish for you stay that way

So here’s a kiss for your sweet cheek

A prayer for you to always be

As happy as you are tonight,

In my arms held close to me

My inspiration for this was the original nursery rhyme, but when I shared it with someone they said that it reminded them of Eminem's "Mockingbird" so I was probably subconsciously influenced by that when I wrote this :)
