Seventy-Two

Seventy-Two

A Poem by peppino ruggeri

Reflections

"

I am resting in a chair on the sunporch

Pondering as I peer into the sky

Summer blooms with fragrance fill the air

I watch a hummingbird that’s whizzing by

My mind has entered a reflective mood

Journeying in a trek through age and space

Shuttling between past and what’s to come

Knowing that time is closing on the race

It yearns, but not reliving days gone by

Of playful youth it doesn’t crave the fire

That burns the senses and obscures the mind

Stoked by ambition and sensual desire

It does not seek the frenzy and the strife

That mask the emptiness of daily life

There are no mountains that it aims to scale

No drive to win, no fear to fail

My heart beats now to a different tune

Music can distill from hollow sound

Rubies can uncover in a pigsty

In silence still can hear the human cry

It seeks the gentle warmth of human touch

Two souls in a slow dance in the twilight

Unspoken words are the sweetest verse

Is like a long embrace a soft caress

A loving glance outshines the brightest star

A smile is radiant as a rose in bloom

A walk in nature, holding hand in hand,

Is just enough for heaven to befriend

I feel as I have aged there is a need to my solitude, and yet I have a greater appreciation for the little kindness of a stranger's hello. It reveals to me I still exist in a world comprised of good hearts. And that I'm seen within it. Thank you Peppino for sharing this very wise contemplative piece of poetry with us.

As we age we mellow. We may not be able to do some of the things we once did, but life is still very much worth living! I am in my 70s too, so I can fully identify with this poem! Your final stanza sums up your poem perfectly!
