Bulletproof

Bulletproof

A Poem by PoemsbyPatrick
"

A friend once tried to teach me that with accomplishment comes freedom. I am still chained too much to the opinions of others.

"
You tried to tell me I was bulletproof,
You tried to teach me what that means.
Freedom to follow my own path,
License to live out my dreams.
You are untouchable, you said,
They can't dictate your fate.
So, choose your own priorities,
And let their demands sit and wait.
Too difficult is it to be,
A person that stands on my own.
I feed off the praise that they give,
To their whims and diversions I'm prone.
It has been such a long time,
Since you tried to teach me to be free.
I am not sure that I can,
Be the man you had hoped I would be.
You tried to tell me I was bulletproof,
I still try to find what that means.
I seek to follow my own path,
While trying to define my own dreams.

This is lovely... haunted and lovely. The last bit rings so true. It seems that this is a lesson we all have to learn more than once. Truly standing on our own two feet is all but impossible, I fear. Perhaps the lesson is the process of learning to become independent is more important than actually getting there?

The journey may be more important than the destination. Thank you for your review.
You see and understand the conundrum so well and yet you cannot break free. Well written.
