An Unexpected Love

An Unexpected Love

A Poem by John Byrd

Who would have thought
All of this would have happened
After this peculiar introduction?
A social dating application?

I wasn't looking for love in Chicago.
I was looking looking for someone to enter in.
What I found was a life partner.
A best-friend,
A lover,
A queen,
Who deserved jewels beyond what I could afford.

You slowly became mine.

An infection traveling to all parts of my body.
But this infection was unheard of.
Rare.
A healing infection.
Healing my heart
My body,
And Soul.

I never thought I would love again.
Risking losing everything.
I would risk it all
For you
Love...

When I first messaged you, you were playing beer pong.
I wanted to be your partner.
We said we would make a great team.
Ironic.
How did we know so early?

Tinder.
You turned soul into tinder and lit a flame.
A flame that no substance could extinguish.
A flame called Love...

isn't it strange how the unexpected can turn into love, which in all intents and purposes,
is a sort of expectation. In fact, you can take a string and pull it as tight as you can
between irony and flame and before your thumb got sore you would hear the echoes
of Dickinson and Whitman adjoining.

Nicely written. dana
