Old World - New World

Old World - New World

A Story by John Preston
"

The loss of an English way of life being overtaken by minority groups and the European Union forcing its will. And so this land is sadly going to the dogs, no more free speech whatever one may say..

"

Early 50’s are we poor
never ever lock our door
my brothers and I stand
in a line, hand held out
waiting excited noisily

A silver sixpence put in my hand
I’m rich right now what can I buy?
I could go to the pictures Saturday Matinee

I could buy lots of sweets
A half penny, two chews
Penny gobstopper, fill’s the mouth
Liquorice root sticks, like twigs
Really do like chewing those

Mars in the heavens still the same size
Buy a mars bar, now so shrunken
Helps you work, rest and play
Oh dear! that last line - banned "mad world
So many sweet jars on wooden shelves

You don’t have to go far
corner shop on every corner
Sadly nearly all gone
Poor little Jack Horner

A whip and top, only a penny
“Yes, these penny toys made to last
not like today's plastic
Craps is a game of chance
played with a dice

Always a penknife in one’s pocket

is it now an offensive weapon?
Yes in the UK could be fined
any excuse minority rule

Hardware store, dried peas by the oz.
Pea shooter wow that hurt
A dobber (slingshot-catapult) we
fired just about anything.

Bobbies on the beat.
