Awaiting the End

Awaiting the End

A Poem by Quinn W
"

An old woman awaits her death.

"
They said it would happen soon,
that my eyes would close and heartbeat slow.
I didn't realize it would come so fast.

My vision blurs
as tears roll down my cheeks.
It's over.It's done.
I don't have to fight anymore.

I feel a warmth
enter my soul.

I've waited so long
for this moment to come.
Many times, I tried
to coax it my way.
That was when I was young
and my problems seemed much bigger.
The blades, the rope,
but it wasn't my time yet.

Now it is.
And I'm ready.

I love this thought-provoking message. I've often longed for death, to escape my worldly issues. But I'm afraid real death rarely comes softly, so it can be a messy & drawn-out experience. It seems like your poem is focusing on the death we would all wish to have, rather than the one many of us end up enduring for months or years . . . *sigh!* Nice job doing the juxtaposition between wanting death to come at a younger age & being ready for death to come at an older age.

A nice, simple poem about a rather complex topic: death ... I enjoyed it.
I like how the details meld together in this one. Each stanza is reflective of the woman's life and feelings, but they each have their own distinct nuance. I especially enjoyed the little turn in the fourth stanza when the woman mentions her past suicide attempts ... it contrasted nicely with the peaceful vibe set by the third stanza. Overall, a bittersweet read. Well done.
