killing innocence

killing innocence

A Poem by linda m. crate

large maple leaves
and acorns litter the yard
rain falls like dew drops
burned away in aurora's light,
all at once autumn falls over us
like the romance
you poured over me
maple syrup falling over pancakes
so rich, so sweet, so true
a never ending river of warmth;
i thought finally we'd burn
one day as proud stars
soul mates tethered by eternity
a connection that could not
be severed by any means -
yet a pocket of lies separated us
until the moon dancing
in your locks was hers not mine,
and in that moment a part
of me died;
you killed my innocence -
once i found solace singing in
the tempest of your eyes,
but now all i can count are the
scars those bruised skies
imprinted on my soul; still i love you,
and i hope one day you're mine again
before winter buries me in an endless snow.
