“Why did the dish run away with the spoon?” Dreyfuss asked.
Mandy shrugged. “I don’t know. Maybe they liked each other.”
“Why did the dog laugh?”
Mandy shrugged again. “I don’t know. Maybe it was funny. I’m going home now. It’s time for you to go to bed.”
Dreyfuss decided to do something first. He grabbed a dish and a plastic spoon from “Frenchy’s Fried Chicken” and held them up before Spot. “They’re running away together. Isn’t that funny?”
“Dishes and spoons don’t have legs,” Spot said. “They can’t run.”
“And dogs can’t talk,” the dish retorted.
“Tres droll,” said the spoon. They laughed.
Spot pointed toward the window. “The moon is getting ready to jump over Bossie.” Then a fiddle marched in, dragging Puss along.
“Diddle Diddle, Hey,” it said. “How about a tune?”
Dreyfuss yawned. “No thanks. I’m going to bed.” Next time he’d watch “The Three-Headed Beast that Ate Catalina” instead of listening to Cousin Mandy read nursery rhymes.
