The Shore

The Shore

A Poem by Heather Clayton

I met him on the beach,

we both were walking our dogs

and we happen to run into each other.

Finding out we are both sixteen

really meant something.

We both live in Ireland.

He was Devon and I was Julia.

He had a kind of blonde hair and freckles

that made him look cute,

not like my dark long hair and pale skin.

But I was different than him.

One day he stayed over at my place

and we had almost kissed.

"Who do you like?"

He said as he dared me.

"Silly!" I said.

"No, really.

Who do you like?"

"Nobody."

"I don't believe you."

Devon said laughing.

"Okay, I do like someone,

but I won't say his name."

I held my lips pursed.

I never got to tell him

that I liked him.

I was too shy.

But fate changed

our lives forever.

It was an overcast day

and the wind was blistery,

yet I went to walk the dog.

The next thing I know I see

a body along the shore

and someone gasping

for help in the water.

I took after them

and noticed the blonde hair;

it was my friend, Devon.

"Devon!!" I screamed.

I didn't know what to do,

so I jumped into the water

to save my drowning friend.

When I entered the water

it happened.

My legs turned into fins.

I swam out to him past the rocks.

I quickly grabbed him

and held onto him tight.

He spat water

out of his mouth.

"J...Julia..."

Devon muttered.

Then I placed him on the shore

and stayed back in the water.

He wiped the salt from his face

and looked at me.

My fish tail was on display

in the murky water,

you could see the silouette.

"I didn't know you were a mermaid."

He said.

"Yes, I'm sorry if I didn't tell you.

Friends tell each other these things."

I said.

"But you are a very beautiful

and brave mermaid.

What else have you not told me?"

He asked.

"I love you very much, Devon.

That is the truth."

I said.

So we spent a few years together

and then we got married

and had ourselves a little mer-child.

As we were on the beach on a sunny day,

I saw my daughter's fins for the first time,

a beautiful blue-green.

As I looked at Devon I knew I was happy.

And our family secret was kept a secret.
