SPAIN

SPAIN

A Poem by rose

He feels it's much too soon
He never wanted to visit spain
Some say that it's sunny over there
But he thinks it's all an illusion.

And his country is as cold as ice
He shivers to keep warm
And spain looks so good
But fear keeps him here

He stays a little while longer
Air travel is much to risky when you're not in control
Maybe he'll go skiing tomorrow morning
and let spain choose him instead.

I'm sorry if I read more into this than intended (but if you're happy with that then great).

I saw this largely as an explanation for why people believe that things are planned out, why people believe in fate: because of fear. This is brought out by the final decision to 'let spain choose him instead'. It's the person who wants to improve his life but instead of actively improving it he tells himself that if things are supposed to get better they will, purely from fear of the unknown.

While writing that and re-reading I also have to wonder about spain. Is it here used to represent heaven and this man's contemplation of death? He decides to let spain (heaven or death) choose him for fear of not knowing what happens when he dies.

My other reading of this was that it's simply about the grass being greener somewhere else. I feel as if there is another man, sitting in 'spain' and wanting to go somewhere cold to go skiing.

One technical point, in the final stanza it should be 'too risky' rather than 'to risky'. I can't decide if you intentionally left 'spain' without a capital letter or not but I'll leave that one to you.

Anyways, thanks for the read.
