The Fall of Pentheus

The Fall of Pentheus

A Poem by James O'Rourke
"

Going mad with Greek gods

"

Sweet and divine Dionysus

I wish to go mad with you

To stand beside you when Pentheus

Sentences you to death by stoning

To dance up the mountain

With the Maenads

Hunting animals and drinking wine

I pray that I am there

When you break free of those shackles

And disguise yourself

Sending Pentheus up the mountain

To kill us in our rapture

Only that foolish man

Driven mad himself

Stranded atop an evergreen tree

Finds himself in dire straits

I want to witness Pentheus forced down

And torn limb from limb

Arms and legs

Head and ribs

And we all howl in ecstasy

Dancing and drinking

In your great honor Dionysus

Author's Note

James O'Rourke
After reading one of the great Greek tragedies: The Bacchae. Probably going to make it a little more vivid. Dionysus is always pulling some crazy stuff.

The good description took me to good places and wild dance.

I have attempted this place to honor Dionysus. I liked the energy and the tale of myth. Thank you for sharing the excellent poetry.
