Surprise Party

Surprise Party

A Poem by sarah

I sit in the living room with the lights off

The anniversary gift I bought you sits untouched

The cake still sits on the table, candles continue to burn bright

Tears build in my eyes

All the guests have gone home

Their gifts stacked on the sofa

The children are asleep in their beds

The house in cleaned

I continue to sit in silence

The only light in the room is from the candles on the cake

I can hear crickets in the distance

A soft breeze blows in through the open window

My glass of wine sits before me

The bottle sits next to it

My hair is curled

I am waring the earings you bought me

Tears stream down my face

Questions haunt my mind

"Why did you leave?"

That question will never be answered

Because you didn't know...

None of us new

I take a sip on wine and dry my tears

I stand up and slowly walk over to your desk that sits in the corner

The pressure in my chest continues to exhaust my spirit

The pain stabs me like a knife

I pick up the picture of you that sits on my book shelf

I slowly run my finger across the edge of the frame

Knowing I will never see your smile again haunts me

My mind travel's back to a few hours earlier

When the excitement filled the house

Family and friends surround me

The kids ran around the house laughing and giggling to each other

And when I saw the light of a car pull up people hid

and made the lights dim so you wouldn't see

But when the door bell rang.....

I knew it wasn't you...

I slowly walked to the door

My heart pounding loudly

My hands started to shake

I slowly opened the front door

Two police men stood before me

Their faceses were filled with sorrow

And they told me you weren't coming home...

I'm alone now

The children don't know

I don't have the heart to tell them

I pull your picture close to my heart

And whisper quietly to myself

"I'll miss you my darling"

Very moving, Sarah. I didn't see it coming. The best writing pulls at the heart and this certainly does.

It is a powerful and sad poem. Some surprises in a life leave us sad and disappointed for a lifetime. These type poems should teach us to appreciate friends and family. Never know when it will be the last time we will see them. Thank you for the sharing the sad poem.
