Mawuli

Mawuli

A Story by Nana
"

In the near future, a former enforcer of the last criminal organisation in Ghana is detained, along with several others in a starship. But when it becomes damaged, it's up to him to maintain order.

"
After the success of the Afena (Longsword) Program in lowering crime rates, in the year 5000, it was proposed that those imprisoned would be shipped off to space in the Starship Nsoromma. This ship would orbit the moon and receive special maintenance once a month.
The Artificial Intelligence Program named Lumei automated everything on board eliminating the need for humans to keep the inmates in check. Until Friday the 13th 2014. Inmate 001, formerly known as Mawuli, used to be an enforcer for )w) the last criminal organisation in Ghana.
He was the first human to notice the meteor shower and secured himself in his cell long before the other inmates were warned to do likewise. As the Starship rattled and shook, he reflected on his brutal past. He had learned very early that the family business was anything but legal.
At the age of 19, he had acquired 5 houses, 15 cars and his own personal armoury. Until the crackdown began, he buried his conscience. Now incarcerated and in his midtwenties, he had been fully rehabilitated and was more than ready for a fresh start. The rattling stopped but Mawuli stepped out of his cell, he saw that part of Nsoromma had collapsed, sealing in most of the inmates and seriously injuring the others.
After giving first aid to the others, he inspected the Lumei device, noting that it was severely damamged. He sent an SOS message to Earth, informing them of their situation. 'Understood', replied the officer on the other end. 'Assistance will be provided to you in the next three days.'
Suddenly the Public Address System broadcast the same message throughout the ship. 'Inmates of sector 1, we will be taking your supplies. Resistance will be met with force.' The inmates of sector 2 were notoriously violent and Mawuli knew that they meant to secure the prison in time for an attack on the officers from Earth.
He persuaded some of the uninjured inmates to set up a barrier to hold off the Sector 2 inmates. When the barrier was set behind him,  he went to see inmate 002, formerly known as Mawutor, a land guard and his roomate, Adu, a bruiser with a violent past. The mob arrived at 10:00 am and Mawuli identified the ringleader to be Afriyie, a former elder of )w).
'Take them', she roared as they charged at the trio. Mawutor stepped forward, striking two of them with a low sweep of his right leg and striking six with his fists. Adu smashed the heads of two of them together and spun towards four of them, striking their  chests with his feet.
Mawutor blocked the kicks and punches of the women surrounding him, striking two of them in the knee, causing them to buckle. He snatched the fist of a third and flung her over his shoulder into two other attackers. The remaining three tried to hit him in a flurry of blows and kicks which he repeatedly blocked before striking the first on the chin.
He kicked the chests of the last two with his left boot. Unnerved by their martail prowess, most of the criminals retreated. Afriyie sunk into an offensive stance and leapt towards Adu, her right knee catching Adu in the face. He rolled on the floor twice and lay unconcsious.
Mawutor spun to his left as Afriyie darted towards him. He threw a series of quick punches at her but she sidestepped them, grabbed both of his fists and swung both of her feet into his chest, sending him sprawling into a corner of the room. Mawuli  lifted his right knee to block Afriyie's fist.
Afriyie shook her hand to ease the pain and then attacked with a series of punches and kicks which he blocked with his knees and fists. They circled each other warily when Mawuli feinted stumbling backwards. Afriyie leapt forwards with a flying kick but Mawuli straightened himself from the feint, sidestepped the kick.
He spun behind her , seized her arms and pulled them backwards before swinging both feet at her back, sending her sprawling into the corner of the room next to Mawutor. One hour later, after both sides had been given first aid, Mawuli declared that both sides would share the supplies until the 3 days were up. He wearily returned to his cell, said his prayers and fell into a deep sleep.
