Horses                     by Sami Khalil

A modern Shakespearean sonnet…

Meadows of green…how they graze the prairie

Walking, trotting, cantering, galloping hooves

I’m no jockey, cowboy, Broncos’ wary

But my charm with equines boldly endures.

Opting to ride, mounting a feral one

Giddying him, it charged its hoofbeats past

Chasing a storm… this trusty steed had fun

Alluding to remorse, my heart knocked fast.

Life is an untamed ride, no guileless beasts

An endless expanse of wilderness reign

Imbued with fanciful, illusive feasts

Aptly we overcome its ladened bane.

It was a sunset romp, casting my cares

Horsing around, bucked with frisky affairs.

This was a great read. I enjoyed your foray into the form. I love horses and mules. My friend has been raising mules a long time. They're such intelligent creatures. A bad natured horse is more common than a bad natured mule. I think the mules get a "stubborn" rep from being generally smarter than their riders. Life requires a bit of "horse sense" sometimes. I like these cool old retro looking illustrations you chose to go with your work too. It reminds me of the Walt Disney books I read as a kid (same type of illustrations). Keep up the great writing.

Every day on my early morning drive to work through the countryside hills of Monterey I see off the side of highway 68 a small corral. It houses about 15 horses that all graze along the greenery of sloped hills. You capture the majestic beauty of these remarkable beasts. They capture our imagination in dreams of riding free on a heavenly plain. Not as a source of movement but a companion and guide to the place where love in all things reside. Amazing poem my friend.

this is so metaphorical...life can be like riding an unbroken horse...
a wild, risky ride...but worth it in the end...when we end up in life's final corral.

Wow! A wonderful story indeed. The rest is history.
The metaphor becomes zoomorphism with such a great comparison of life to the prarie and the ride to experience. Very nicely written with a great AB rhyme scheme
