Amidst the Bedlam      by Sami Khalil

A modern English sonnet

This pirate ship sailed off with clueless dreams

A loutish course, dreamers cautiously row

Mimed abed somber nights, dredging up schemes

Fallen leaves and of twigs dappled in woe.

Whether life or the mind, they ambush us

Leaving behind trails of retrospect things

No pride is left when we lose the game thus

Justice can play out its underfoot swings.

Time to ponder, to walk jostling slower

Naught but guile-less how smugly we view paths

How death can be a checkout line’s goer

Subduing varied moods, joy-filled to wraths.

Things elude us, hidden down in plain sight

Grasping at straws, we clutch unto dawn’s might.

Would the raw, murderous, uncouth, female preying pirate, ever have dreamed that his ill-begotten, barbaric behavior be enrolled in a finely done example of the difficult sonnet poetic style?
Only Blackbeard could say!

I love all the subtle images you create with this poem. There are so many ways to interpret your pirate voyage. I know most days I feel boarded and scuttled! Kudos for such a visually creative and verbally intriguing poem!

Grasping at straws yet we must not let go, because where there is a will there is hope. We all deserve to navigate the sea of life in peace and that is where my thoughts travel. Master of sonnets Sami, you cover so much ocean with your lines. Always a pleasure to visit you.

Read this twice, once aloud, Sami.. so wanting to share your voyage. But seems we need follow our own course, taking the weather, the clouds and the sea as they hit or miss us. Too many squalls are as dangerous as the doldrums' cruelty, we try to keep control, with or without a crew but.. life is chance and we have to take it. Yes? No? Or, do we curl into a squidge in the back of a cave and feel the flow of the ocean gradually wearing us down.. down.

Your wording is inspiring here, Sami; plus, that striking painting spotlights your fine sonnet' s many metaphors. You must be related to Canute, you know the oceanic hows and whys!!!

There are plenty of things which can rob our dreams chronic diseases strained relationships financial and emotional insecurities wars natural calamities goes on and on when we are in this life ship. The rough reality is that we do not have control over these and at times have no defense against them. What is left us to do is eat the desert first as we have is this moment. Great poem Samie. Lots of footing to real world .

You are so right
No defense against them.
The dawn will break....as it always does. Too often it seems the world is quite unjust to us. We can be ambushed by both friend and foe. Dreams, though, are always held onto. We believe we can will things into existence. Of course, we have no such control, but the thought can keep a person going at times....even while walking the plank! Lydi**

The ship of life but can we swim if we walk the plank? Who knows where we sail, it’s where ever the wind takes us. In the meantime we dream on.

a 'life' sonnet and well done... it raises the question of dreams and dreamers and what we accomplish along the path of life... are dreams just that, dreams? wishful thinking or are they goals to be achieved and struggled for, real, sometimes met, sometimes not?? and can we change life, and affect its flow in ways that make a difference?? there is a poem by Mao Tsetung called "Ode To The Plum Blossom" in it there is a line which says, "She seeks not Spring for herself alone"... it is a metaphor, and what you poem invoked in me was this line and poem and in saying, if our lives are for Spring (used as metaphor), and we live for more than ourselves, then the dreams we have are ones worth striving for and making real.. our lives will have meaning...
Sami, your poem has once again given me thoughts about who we are and what we do in life... it is art that entices and inspires... thank you dear poet!!
