Dancing with ‘Death’   by Sami Khalil

An English sonnet… Gloomy but realistic.

Casting a glow where sole choices must go

Grasping flow where canvases overtop

Steady rise laid the promises solo

Where ‘Time’ drew the line in the sand full stop.

Those twelve chimes recall what was done proclaimed

…Peace never came and youth lacking sunshine

Outside windows, regrets broke free untamed

Glimpsing clouds where bare trees hung the plus sign.

My green fields do still carry notes lonesome

Words that lack silences, sadly missing

My life is a ghost self-held in ransom

Dreams sailing foggy mists midst waves crashing.

Casting glows where burnt ash filled the hourglass

Slow dancing with death, we sway en masse.

For me somehow - an acceptance to the dark unknown. Knowing full well that the finish will complete the whole - like it or not. 'We reap as we sow.'

We learn by rote, we accept what we must, we do our best even if worse than it might have been.

'My green fields do still carry notes lonesome
Words that lack silences, sadly missing
My life is a ghost self-held in ransom
Dreams sailing foggy mists midst waves crashing.'

Good to know. Enjoy the music and the dance.
This artwork is incredible!! "Slow dancing with death" makes me think of a prolonged illness. Perhaps a problem that just won't go away and cannot be solved. The imagery is stunning. I liked this one a lot. Lydi**

A melancholy piece, very well written;
We all have unique lives, some more pleasant than others, we all make mistakes along the way; and when we pass on we must be at peace with ourselves “ slow dancing with death, we sway en masse”…..
Well done Sami

Wow! Thank you so much dear poet and friend for the good review.
Take care.
In-between birth and death there is life. And the slow waltz with our dying. Some of the hardest steps in this waltz are the parts where regrets become the obstacles of stepping on our partners feet. Then too, how we face death says a lot about how we have lived our lives. We all die and pay the price for living. Surly poet Sami, your life is not a "ghost self-held"!! That ransom has been paid in full by the sonnets you have written!!!

Excellent read as always. This reminded me of “momento mori” calling one to make all your moments count.

This strikes a quite almost chilling chord, it feels like standing at the edge of one's own memories watching time slip away with both sorrow and resignation. The lines about "youth lacking sunshine" and " my life is a ghost self-held in ransom" feel especially raw, like they speak to those moments when you look back and wonder where joy and clarity were lost. There is something deeply relatable in the way the poem moves between beauty and grief like the slow dance with death is not just about dying, but about enduring the quiet fading of hope, dreams, and even identity.
It made me reflect on my own silences, my own unfinished promises.
