Less Than Half My Age

Less Than Half My Age

A Poem by abluehorseandflowers
"

An ode to a talent in a form not typically used this way. But since pain, which is typical to sestina, is a central element I thought I'd give it a go.

"

Less Than Half My Age

Though deeply entrenched and real is my pain

I've felt another's of more consequence

What I've written of with genuine weight

Feels as feathers when compared to those rocks

Of my poems I'm proud both meter and rhyme

And now I must write of a true talent

There's a depth of truth that's beyond talent

A breadth of skill that harnesses the pain

With lyrical quality needing no rhyme

She starkly presents her consequence

While there may be walls of mortar and rocks

Her poignant words gives the lie to that weight

How does one so young and bearing that weight

Have time or heart to explore her talent

I've spent 30 years with feet like rocks

Giving in and again once more to my pain

Dismissing concerns of the consequence

Sowing discord while ignoring the rhyme

True beauty seems bound in delicate rhyme

With meter and form the substance of weight

Emotions in words provide consequence

Each being equal the poets talent

The best derived while enduring the pain

Creating smooth sculpture using coarse rocks

When the time arrived to crush her wall's rocks

She created beauty without the rhyme

Using words as art to discharge her pain

Her age beyond years shall carry less weight

Yet and still shes marshaling her talent

To shed the effect of dead consequence

Already her words create consequence

Inspiring me to break more rocks

I can't help but admire her talent

She lifted me with words lacking a rhyme

When she bared her grief my own lost it's weight

Because through her poem I knew my pain

With no consequence there can be no pain

Life keeps adding rocks regardless of weight

The poet's talent shares them with her rhyme

This is really good! I love the emotion and word choice and clear reverence here for the younger person here :)

(My only critique would have to be that a Sestina ends in a 3 line envoi. So, 6 sestets, then the envoi, which should be "ACE" or "ECA" but all 6 words should still be included :) Sorry if you meant to write it the way you did on purpose XD It still reads just as beautifully, just wanted to go ahead and mention that)

Damn, thanks. I've got the envoi graphed, but went to eat, came back and forgot it.
