Broken Heart Begone

Broken Heart Begone

A Poem by Michael G. Smith
"

the ghost of love

"

My broken heart is an old friend now

I see her once in awhile

In eyes of other faces

The shattered dish that fell upon the tile

She never smiles

And I still feel her pain

But it no longer belongs to me

And I never worry to see her again

Although she’s there in a shadow

Sometimes when I’m marking the calendar days

Or looking through old photographs

Clothes with tough to remove stains

She never bothers me just stops and stares

I always look back for a moment at her

And then smile to myself

Hug my wife and close the door

I like the personification of your broken heart to an old friend, but I’m wondering why it is a “she.”

Thank you so much. Without any broken hearts will never know what true love is.

Your more than welcome. This is so very unfortunate but also so very true.
I think to some extent our human nature is to dwell a little bit on why something didn't work out. For some the dwelling never stops and that's where the problem would lie. But eventually it's positive when we can finally let it be and close that door. Realize what we have in the present time is the way it's supposed to be.

Absolutely true. Thanks for giving your insights.
Michael, this is so good! I think it is identifiable with so many people. I know a friend of mine whose wife ran away from him after the first week of marriage. She cheated on him a week after the wedding. He had to live with his own perceived failure for years until he dared to trust again, and found love one more time. He still sees her, or a shell of her former self, around town. This is well written, and pulls emotion out of you with every line. I love the ending! Great writing.

Broken hearts.....most of us have suffered them at some point. Best to keep them in the shadows and move on with our lives. I like the attitude in this. You had a broken heart, but found a wife and you love her...that is what you dwell upon. The personification of the heart is great. Very well written. Lydi**
