Worthwhile

Worthwhile

A Poem by Faded

There’s a certain moment
In the midst of all the minutes
When your thoughts start to slow
And the buzz of the world dims
It comes when you get lost in the wilderness
Or at the Temple in the heart of the city
When your son counts to 10 for the first time
Or when he needs spoon fed for the last time
It’s the clouds of defeat settling over a man’s eyes
As he accepts there are some things he just can’t fix
While he lifts his terminally ill wife into her wheelchair
And the fear within the man who swore he’d never love again
As he realizes he might be falling for her
It’s strangers finding solace together in the Hospital waiting room
And the feeling the high school dropout gets as he turns his tassel
But also,
The resignation of the young artist giving up on his dreams
It’s in the instant you turn the car around
To go back and tell your sin to your King
And the sound of his voice when he tells you it’s not too late
To try and get it right this time around
It’s in the airport parking garage
When the victim climbs into your car to start her new life free of violence
On the fourth anniversary of the day one not so lucky
Was taken from us forever.
It’s when your heart starts pounding out of your chest
And you feel your strength to stand steadily leaving you
Knowing all your day dreams are at stake
Each time you watch the man you waited all your life to meet
Walk towards you
And in that same instant your own heart beat has become deafening
Your thoughts quiet
And you know the future version of yourself is being shaped
That your story is being defined
But that more importantly
Your story isn’t about you
It’s about the many diverse souls who have touched you
Your story is a compilation of their effects on you
And that for better or for worse
They have all been blessings
It’s getting into bed each night
Completely exhausted, stretched so thin
Wondering how you could possibly aide even just one more
Or how much of yourself you have left to give
And if it has all been worth it
But taking that one day each week to rest
And feeling the Lord restore to you
All the energy you’ve spent
While he renews your motivation
That in these moments, when stories are written
Hope can be found
That even in failure, assistance is given
The lights of purpose, of fulfillment, of humanity, of humility
Remind that there is always some good left to fight for
And that it is always worth the fight
