FIGHT FOR INDIVIDUALITY

I tried to walk…

I tried to learn to walk…

With them, who are well versed in walking.

I stumbled.

They tried to mock..

They tried to learn to mock…

At me, who is well versed in mocking.

They failed.

I tried to dissolve

I tried to learn to dissolve

In them who are well versed in dissolving.

I couldn’t.

They tried to defeat

They tried to learn to defeat

Me, who is well versed in defeating.

They lost.

Now…

I am not social.

I am not asocial.

I am not anti social..

I am what I am..

I am an Island..

Always nagged by waves..

Exhorting and bullying me…

To deprive myself of my stability

To be frail and fugacious like them.

I didn’t budge…

How can I turn back..

How long can I pretend?

That I have not seen my true nature?

That I am an alien to my own entity?

This poem is all about not fitting in and being one of the crowd. It seems like modern society is all about complying and being 'average' and your poem is striking back in a very powerful way.

In the beginning you seem to be expressing your attempts to fit in. Although you describe your failure as a stumble it seems by the second stanza you have taken their mockery you were subjected to and turned it back on the average crowd.

I really like the fifth stanza where you are renouncing all the things you are not. It's all too easy to allow yourself to be pigeon holed and your confession, 'I am what I am' serves to underline how you renounce this trait.

I can think of few things less aspiring than wanting to be average and you do a great job of explaining your personal 'fight for individuality'.
