LOVES OF MY LIFE:1

I love eating peanuts in the shell:

pinch them open along the seam

and peep inside to see the prize:

one, two, three little legumes---

sometimes four or five! I see them

as beings; create stories

about Life in the Pod. One can get

rather Freudian speculating

about the nuts (beans, goober peas,

whatever).

How does one little nut outgrow another?

Why does one mature, and its mate

disappear without a trace? How did five

get in there in the first place?

I like to pop them out of their beds

and crunch them, skins and all.

makes me feel earthy. And strong.

Satisfied---like a giant. It takes time

to eat a peanut in the shell---

a slow-down fast food; a whole food.

A soul food. A gift from the earth

to which I will one day return---

all but my jolly old well-fed soul.

Not to be nice, but this is some of the best poetry I've seen in this darkened cafe in a long time. I can see that you have a compelling use of the English language and a soul eager to explore it.

This particular piece reminds me of something that Mary Oliver would write - earthy and transcendent all in the same short breath.

Stella, you got groove.
